Mission statement: We aim to raise public awareness of the responsibility each and everyone has when approaching level crossings on New Zealand’s rail network. Through public awareness and education campaigns, our aim is to reduce loss of life, harm and suffering for the victims of rail accidents.

The Chris Cairns Foundation was initiated in 2006 by former New Zealand International Cricketer Chris Cairns, whose sister Louise was killed whilst a passenger on board a train in 1993 when a cement truck failed to stop at a level crossing.

  • The Foundation is acutely aware of the need to promote personal responsibility when engaging in any activity in or around level crossings and the rail network.
  • Since 1993, over 100 people have lost their lives at level crossings.

“I really want the Foundation to make a difference with rail safety in New Zealand. Since Louise died over 100 people have lost their lives at road level crossings and I am committed to ensuring that people understand their responsibilities at level crossings and that this number does not continue to grow”.

The Foundation has three primary focuses:

1. Education

Educating people to make sure that they understand the dangers associated with level crossings and the rail network.

2. Partnerships

By joining forces with government agencies to contribute to further safety initiatives around level crossings in New Zealand.

3. Awareness

By embarking on a public awareness/media campaign the Foundation aims to make all New Zealanders aware level crossings and the rail network are something we live with daily.

"...and I am committed to ensuring that people understand their responsibilities at level crossings and that this number does not continue to grow".
