Chris Cairns Announces Walk Date
On the 1st of October Chris Cairns announced he will be walking from Auckland to Rolleston, just outside of Christchurch in memory of his sister Louise Cairns who died 1993 when a truck drove into the train she was a passenger in. The announcement took place at the Shell Service Station on Riccarton Road in Christchurch. A short work followed from Shell Riccarton through Hagley Park to Shell Carlton Corner where a sausage sizzle was hosted by The Rock FM.
Shell is a major supporter of the foundation and will play a major role in helping with the Chris Cairns Charity Walk. Shell’s Communication Manager Jackie Maitland said “we acknowledge Chris’ energy and passion on raising awareness of level crossing hazards and we are delighted to join forces with the Foundation and put our support behind such an important issue. The walk will be hard but we will be there with him everyday”.
Chris will start the walk from Auckland on the 30th of August 2008 and will finish at the site where Louise died in Rolleston. Along the way Chris hopes to raise as much money as possible for the Chris Cairns Foundation which was launched earlier this year. As well as raising money, Chris will promote the need for education through out all the communities throughout New Zealand.
The walk will follow State Highway One all the way down the country with one diversion to Palmerston North.
Chris said he was extremely thankful to all those who supported the launch of the walk especially the appearance from the emergency services such as the Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulance service who have to deal with the tragic accidents that happen at level crossings. He also was very appreciative of the Toll train drivers for attending the launch as they are the innocent ones in these accidents who can't avoid the situations.
