Chris Cairns Foundation Wins 2008 Safety Award
The Chris Cairns Foundation has won the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport’s annual Safety and Security Innovation Award for 2008.
The presentation to the Foundation’s Charity Manager, Patrick Jackson, will be made at the CILT annual Awards Dinner to be held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Wellington on Wednesday the 15th of October, with the Charity to be the focus of fund-raising on the night.
Peter Snow, President of CILT NZ said “last year the CILT dinner raised $12,000 for CanTeen through donations and the sale of bandanas on the night, and it is hoped to raise a similar amount for the Cairns Foundation in 2009.”
Chris Cairns has recently completed a walk from Pukekohe near Auckland to Rolleston in Canterbury, a distance of over 1000km in memory of his sister Louise and two other young people who died in 1993 when a cement truck failed to stop at a railway level crossing and hit the train in which they were travelling.
So far Chris and the Foundation have raised over $26,000 to assist with providing safety equipment at level crossings, and their aim is to educate the general public in taking responsibility for safety at all railway crossings.
The CILT in New Zealand Inc. is a National Section of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport ., an international body established by Royal Charter in 1922. Over 33,000 transport and logistics practitioners in more than 30 countries belong to the Institute, securing their position as a key international organisation which promotes professional development and knowledge exchange.
