Chris Cairns saddened by Rakaia level crossing fatalities

Rail safety campaigner and former international cricketer Chris Cairns says he is saddened to learn of the level crossing collision near Rakaia in June this year that claimed the lives of two people.

Chris Cairns says the collision is a reminder of the dangers associated with level crossings.

"I can relate to how the families of those involved will be feeling today, and my sincere condolences go out to them," he said.

Chris’sister Louise was killed in a level crossing accident near Rolleston in 1993 when a cement truck failed to stop at a level crossing and collided with the passenger train on which she was travelling. Two other women also lost their lives in the accident.

In 2006 Chris and his mother established the Chris Cairns Foundation which, through public awareness campaigns, aims to reduce loss of life, harm and suffering for the victims of rail accidents.

"Since Louise died over 100 people have lost their lives at road level crossings and I am committed to ensuring that people understand their responsibilities at level crossings and that this number does not continue to grow," he says.

Chris will be in New Zealand next month for the Australasian Rail Safety Awareness week and will be involved in a number of rail safety awareness events throughout the country.
