Day Nineteen - Foxton to Levin

The morning dawned bright and sunny again and I have to say I cannot believe our luck to date with the weather as we have had 19 days walking and just one day of rain….fingers crossed it continues!!

Foxton greeted us with their best impression of a desserted town and we breezed through there in ten minutes and then back out on to sate highway one. The day did not have too much to report really as I just put my head down and went for it. It is the best I have felt for five days and poor David Craig who has been my trusty companion for the majority of the walk really felt the pace and his shins were giving him a lot of grief. However he’s a pocket dynamo and he went through the pain barrier and saw it out to the end……brilliant effort Dave!!

With an earlyish afternoon finish we had time to tidy and clean the vans and recover for tomorrow. However Selwyn was exposed to a rather gross encounter when he cut a blood blister on my little toe. The pressure build up meant that Selwyn’s glasses were sprayed with some unsightly fluid and personally I would have thrown up but Selwyn wiped them down and continued on……..what a trooper! The evening was spent talking to the locals at the Waiakane Hotel and thanks so much to them for their generous donation. Bit of a let down to not win the meatpack raffle but great hospitality!

Dinner was good old Kiwi “Friday night…fish n chip night” followed by a hand of poker and congrats to Sophie and Scott for winning the spoils. Tomorrow see’s a similar distance of just over thirty km’s to get to Waikane so until then…
