Day Seven - Tokoroa to Atiamuri Village

Wet, cold, wet….and cold! That about sums up today’s walk. We started the morning with a big cooked breakie of bacon and eggs kindly donated by J.W and M.M Paterson on the road into Tokoroa. Thank you very much to Mrs. Paterson who ran out to one of our support cars to donate the goods…it made a very cold morning that little bit warmer!

There isn’t a whole lot I can say about today apart from how tough it is to walk in extremely difficult conditions. My support crew were fantastic and even without police support today we managed to get through the day safely. Each of our Hyundai support vehicles is fitted with a flashing orange light that sits on the right side of the car to notify other motorists of walkers ahead. In addition to this our trailing vehicles have large fluro “WALKER AHEAD” signs fitted to the rear of each car.

The support crew are in constant contact via 2-way radios, which are used for both safety and to keep themselves entertained during the longer days.

We are staying in Taupo for the next three days as we walk either side of the town. We are eagerly watching the weather this evening in hope the rain will lighten for tomorrow. The hot tub at the hotel proved a welcome relief after a long cold day….a big feed and a good sleep tonight should see me right for another big 38km day tomorrow.
